Oil on canvas 37" by 37"
Some years ago I was researching images for my Master Painting Techniques course and I came across a good reproduction of the angel in Virgin of the Rocks in the National Gallery in London. I decided to take a detail of the angel's face and blow it up to a large scale and paint this painting as an homage to Leonardo da Vinci's genius. To work in the manner of another artist was instructive and rewarding. For example, how many contemporary artists would represent those coiled curls in the manner we see here, with light hitting individual strands of hair?
